On Thursday Oct 1 Apple released the latest iteration of their personal computer operating system, Mac OS X. Codenamed “El Capitan”, Mac OS X 10.11 visually looks like it’s predecessor Mac OS X 10.10 “Yosemite”.
Installing
Like Mac OS X 10.7 and newer, “El Capitan” is available for free through the Apple App Store. The download weighs in at a whopping 6GB so it is not for those on slow unreliable connections. Once downloaded, the install can be triggered by launching the “Install OS X El Capitan” application found in your Applications folder. After providing administrative credentials, your computer will reboot and perform the install. The actual install process is very simplistic and looks like a firmware upgrade, albeit on that took over 45min on this 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 2012 MacBook Pro with 8 GB of memory. Once installed the computer will reboot again and you’ll be asked to sign in to iCloud (note you can skip this by choosing “Don’t Sign In” and clicking the right pointing “continue” arrow) and then you will be using Mac OS X 10.11 “El Capitan”. This process other than taking awhile was fairly smooth, my only gripe is that I keep my iCloud password in my keychain so it is impossible for me to sign in to iCloud before being able to access my Keychain.

Visual Appeal
The first thing I noticed having upgraded from Mac OS X 10.9 “Mavericks” was the difference in the visual appearance. Introduced in June 2009, Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard” refined the visual appearance of the Mac OS jettisoning much of the visual garbage (think pin stripes and brushed metal) of earlier versions and introduced Mac users to a user interface that was largely a treat to use. This UI communicated function well while fading into the background to let you work. Thus the lower detail icons, use of blurred underlay and the soft, bright color palette of Mac OS X 10.10 and 10.11 make the user interface appear as though someone turned up the gamma on the display far past a comfortable setting. I thought I would get used to the interface quickly after using 10.10 on my home computer but I keep getting distracted by the confusing use of the blurred underlay effect and how poor the core application icons look. Thankfully, Apple has included an option to eliminate the underlay effect, though not in System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver, where in had been in Mac OS X 10.7 through 10.9. Users can find the “Reduce transparency” option in the System Preferences > Accessibility control panel.
New in Mac OS X 10.11
On opening Mail for the first time I had to wait while my email “database” was updated and was then informed that I had to update the installed version of GPGMail. I agreed to install the GPGMail beta and after downloading, Mail restated. Curiously, Mail appeared to re-download a good bit of my email but once done I have been back to business as usual with email. Err wait… that’s odd. Mail has started to parse emails, find contact information and provisionally add it to my contacts. This could be very useful for some of my clients.
Download El Capitan from the Mac App Store. Head over to your existing OS X environment running 10.9 or later and open the Mac App Store. Search for 'El Capitan' and click Download. The download is completely free if you're running OS X 10.9+. Wait for the download to finish (this could take some time). Now, launch the Mac App Store, go to the El Capitan page or Purchased tab and download OS X El Capitan from there. MAS will now download it from the local server at a high speed. Once downloaded, you may proceed with the installation by clicking on Continue when the setup launches. Go to the App Store and open the El Capitan page there. Then you must click on the ‘Download; button on the El Capitan Page. If your Mac PC is compatible to perform this upgrade, a file named ‘Install OS X El Capitan’ will download to your Applications folder. The installer will open automatically after finishing the download process.

One of my favorite features of Windows 7, okay perhaps the only feature I appreciate, is the ability to snap a window to one side of the screen and another window to the other side. Microsoft created a simple gesture, drag a window to the side of the screen and it snaps to half the screen. Now Mac OS X includes something similar. Two full screen Apps can be combined by dragging the thumbnail of one on to another in the Mission Control bar. Apple’s combination of workspaces with full screen apps has certainly grown on me. I expect to enjoy writing using the side by side configuration.
Other Thoughts
In general the software I use both frequently (Firefox, Text Mate, CyberDuck, Adium) and infrequently (Pixelmator, LibreOffice, Picassa, SwiftPublisher, OmniGraffle) have been working well. Even some oddball software ZTerm and iStumbler appear to be working well. Many users of Microsoft Office 2016 however seem to be experiencing difficulty after updating to Mac OS X 10.11. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem but thus far they have not released a fix and given what is known about the issue it may be some time before a fix is possible. In the mean time LibreOffice has been replacing Microsoft Office for many of MePush’s clients.

The Appstore only has updates but not the original OS. So If you did not download El Capitan before it was removed from the App Store then you will not be able to get it from the Appstore anymore. You can now only download it via alternative sources, Just make sure they are trusted sources though. Hence I recommended the link above.
